Irreplaceable Ian

Ian’s passing has left me truly saddened and finding words to express our loss has inevitably  left me grasping.

May I offer my heartfelt condolences to his wife Amanda and sons Jason and Adam.

As I reflect on how long I’ve known Ian, it takes me back to our time together on BAPCO’s  Executive Committee so many years ago. Unlike some of us in those days, Ian was  a measured thinker and observer yet always prepared to put a considered view forward for consideration.

As the years rolled by and Ian was about to retire from the Police Service, BAPCO found itself in need of a new CEO.  As President at the time I was well aware that the organisation needed to evolve in terms of both its business practice and in its relationship with others.

We were therefore indeed fortunate that Ian was not only ideal from almost every  perspective but he was uniquely qualified and in truth the only suitable candidate.  We were doubly fortunate in that he was also available and on being asked, was willing to take on the role. Since then it goes almost without saying that he was indeed the right man in the right place at the right time for BAPCO.

Ian was not only my colleague but also my friend and as such we had many ‘interesting’  and amusing conversations over our time involved with the PSRCP and other inter service issues.

I shall miss him terribly. Ian was a top bloke and in every sense a really nice guy.

Taken far too soon, he is simply irreplaceable.

In sadness

Keith Phillips OBE
